The little garden

Our first project is ready. It wasnt a first priority but while we had a gap used it for make a little garden. Judit was keen to take that work b. she felt a strong connection with this specific place.                Follow the permaculture steps.

Observation: This garden is sunny, poor rocky soil with existing plants. The field is slightly slope.

Integrate rather than segragare/ Use and value diversity :We not destroyed the old garden just cleaned it and make space for vegetable. We kept the already exist trees, shrubs and flowers.           20160407_161106

Catch and store energy: Here in the Canary Island a biggest problem is a water. The soil really dry so people use watertank to store the water. It is can be springwater or council water. This part is tricky b.we have to watering every day.

Produce no waste:For make more fertility the garden IMG_5401we put lot of sheepcompost that make sure the plants have enough nutricients. Cover by dead leaves keep the moist  in the soil.

Obte20160407_161224in a yield: Our reward a beautiful garden with veggies, edible flowers and plants                                                   .

Rose and Judit-Adventure for a hot shower

Judit

We had a problem with a cold weather-there was no chance to have a hot shower. I washed myself in cold but still… I wanted to wash my hair in hot water… and additional Rosa and me wanted to discover Santa Cruz de la Palma, the capital of La Palma. Our the room was book and we left Friday early morning. Our mistake was because of Easter Friday is bank holiday so buses going less frequency.

After we reached La Palma we easily find our apartment we rent. First we went to see the city centre and get a coffee. The main road is covered with cobblestones and spanish style colored houses. The houses are pink, green, red, peach, violet and so on. Just two streets away there is a big long rock houses on the top, to get there you have to go up in tiny mazy streets and staired ways. Remember me Szentendre the hungarian village quite similar.

Took a hot shower, washed hair was a heaven!

We had a taste of Easter here with some strange symbols. It was interesting to see how they celebrate here.

Rose

What can I say about this weekend!?!? I really enjoyed my time in Santa Cruz, because as I already wrote on my first blog I think is a really nice and colonial style city with craft shops. I also had the opportunity to know better Judit, my new friend but not only that… she will be part of my new family! We had a really great time and I think she is really patience because my English is not so fluent as hers, unfortunately but hopefully it will be better in few weeks.

By the way, we woke up quite earlier that morning because we should suppose to take the GuaGua (the bus) at 7.30am but no buses and no cars where on the street so I was quite surprised, and I started to feel really frustrated and tired… I just wanted to reach Santa Cruz as soon as possible. I felt myself quite dirty and smelling. I wanted to take a shower and I needed to feel more comfortable with myself… Initially we thought a delay but after almost one hour we realized that was a bank holiday day. In Italy Easter is just on Sunday (Pasqua) and Monday (Pasquetta) is still bank holiday… how could we know that!?!?

We tried doing hitch-hiking but there were just few cars on the street and not everybody wanted stopping to give us a lift but after almost one hours and a half later a man (really kind of him!!) gave us a lift to Puntagorda and then we caught the GuaGua at 9.30, before jumping on the bus we had a really nice coffee and we laughed about the weird situation…

The GuaGua that we choose to catch follows the north part of the island and it takes almost 3 hours to reach the capital but it is a sort of sightseeing bus! We view was incredible! We crossed several villages with really narrow streets and then… I got sick: sore machine! OMG!! I could just look the street in front of me if not I could feel retching.. too many curve, up and down… I think was too much for me!! By the way I suggest you this way at least once in your life because is amazing… the nature is everywhere and the view to the Ocean is incredible!

I love the nature and that it… so we decide to take the bus to go back to Puntagorda from Santa Cruz!! Crazy!!

When we arrived to destination the room wasn’t ready (What I was thinking in that moment: “OMG!! I want to take a shower right now I was waiting for this moment for a really long time… but we have 2 days for that… so be patience and calm down :-)”) so we took a look around the city and for lunch we ate a Bocadillo (panini) with Tortilla and vegetables accompanied by a bottle of water!!

Most of the shops were closed and from far away  we could hear a local band playing some really catholic music and when we reached the band we figure out that was a procession! Men were holding a Jesus’ Statue on their shoulders and behind them the local band! For me was something completely new…

Then we went back to our room, I finally took a shower after 1 week (I was really happy) and I took a nap!

At 7pm we went out and we decided to eat something in a typical bar a bit far away from the city center… the food was fine but not really typical as we thought unfortunately.

When we reached the city center we realize that a lot of local people were running to the city quite well dressed…  and we wanted to figure out the reason and after few “calles” later we understood what was going on: the procession was bigger than in the afternoon and attendances were following it in silence. The smell of incense was everywhere… a teenager next to me had the hands on her mouth and nose because she didn’t really like the smell and some elder people close to me where looking at the procession and made whispered comments on it. The silence and the incense were all around… the only sound I could hear were coming from the chains that somebody in the procession was wearing… yes, chains on their feet!!

IMG_5139                              IMG_5122

IMG_5135                       IMG_5124

The procession was quite long and a lot of local people were involved in it.

The tradition is really strong in this island!

See U soon!!

Judit

Judit – First jobs

What can we do while we still waiting for our group members arrive? We managed the cleaning a kitchen mostly tidied up the unused fridges. Looks easy job but is not. Dirty, long time not used. We use just natural product- water, cleaning solution( alcohol, vinegar, orange and lemon peel)from Samadhi. Even we have no hot water make things more difficult.

20160315_11243520160315_112428

In the kitchen we have a useless rocket stove and Maja-s rocket stove, no electricity and water. Even we have no proper walls so it is cold and windy. The original plan was make a wall from fridge and use as a storage place which we need a lot. Because rats coming in the night we have to store everything in the fridges. We have no table and chairs, have to make.

This place going to be our living room and kitchen. At the moment I feel it is so far…

Judit-Mixed feelings

It was a long time to wait for Maja, Ludka. Gabi, Jana, Mateusz and Michael arrive but finally they did.  But soon in the next they we started to realized how many things to do as soon as possible:a lot!!! It is overwhelming: the meetings, talking, understanding how things work, prioritized thing and start a work straight . No tome for observation just lets do it. The kitchen: make a table, benches, rocket stove, make a wall,  deconstructed the walls. Cooking together, get kitchen equipment, washing mashine, sheeps and guinea pig food start a vegetable garden and fix many things.. A of course make a video, picture, write down a design. And buy food, tools, make list what do we need for everythings but keep low the budget.

The feeling was shocked, confused, overwhelming and really dont know how slow down. Started from Saturday and still on it.

The weather not help-maybe the local people happy because need rain here- but for us make thing more difficult we have no close, warm place when getting cold, raining (not big one just shower). But hard the stay all the time outside especial in the evening.                   We manage to use a library and a caravan as well for meetings but noting else. I quite fine with this weather Rosa struggling with this. Looks continue a week so we have to be strong.

The solar shower broke down but in this cold not have hot water. Finally today we have a few hours sun and I had a nice shower!

The kitchen is a mess, tried organize our food and thing for cooking but is difficult b. the guys build there.

We are going to be fine but need time, patient, and make time for relax not stressed out. And it is not easy.

Judit-My first feelings and impressions in La Palma

Hi. My  first feelings:  I had a safe journey, relative smooth. When I was in the bus I was amazed abaut how green this island. On the bus one side I saw the sea and the other side the hill. The soil full with rocks is  red but everything covered with plants- cactus, trees, flowers.                                                                                                                                                       Warm welcome from people mix with a strange feeling I need time to know this place and people how it is work..

The first impressions:                                                                                                                                       See beautiful sunshine altought the air is not so warm you know this kind of weather when in the sun you want to have a short tee-shirt but in the shadows still need a long jumper. View from our place

Hear: was how quiet- no it is not a right word.. because is not not quiet. In the farm can’t hear the cars, city noise but full with  chirp and tweet and sing (birds) mixed with  some cock-a-doodle-doo( rooster) and bee( sheeps).

Smell is a summer smell with flowers. Of course when you are crossing the sheep’ place it isn’t that nice:) and the orange and lemon which is one of my favorite.

The taste for orange, lemon and nisperos. I wasn’t familiar with this last on it is a huge tree the fruit is oval shaped, small plum size with yellow strong skin and taste juicy inside. (Other name is loquat, japonese medlar, chinese plum, japanese plum.) And for Jose’rice with veggies which it was really good.

IMG_4903          IMG_4926        IMG_4912

The air wich not so warm but the sun “touching me so warm. In the opposite of the night which was quite cold.     And touching the guinea pig hair so soft- I helped to feed them and the cactus which sting me when I cleaned to give to the guinea pig.

But a few hours and and the snow was gone.

Because of the weather we didn’t go to the park we visited the  library. Do you like book? Smelling touching reading? My memories abaut library and book are  bring back my childhood when my father worked as a librarian.

There wasn’t computer everything was manual, you have a paper ticket and a stamps for a dates. I remember to help my father work and participate in the competition  in the children library. I loved it.

Obviously  we had a lot of books at home as well. Reading  regularly in the evening was part of the evening ceremony when I was 10. My father read Robinson Crusoe while we scratched his back. Many book and many stories with my granny my mum and my dad. And when I was able to read non stop always have a book from our house library or the local one.

Not just read it we played it with my brother and sister..  Mary Popping, Winnetou,  Jeno Rejto, Three musketeers, Little house in the big woods, Ransome: Swallows and Amazons…

And not surprisingly I bought my younger sister to the library when I minded her ( remember once accidently lost her before we turn back home) and I did with my younger brother- visit a library was part of our life.
